Depression chat Although a low mood or state of dejection that does not affect functioning is often colloquially referred to as depression, clinical depression is a clinical diagnosis and may be different from the everyday meaning of "being depressed". Close medical supervision is critical to proper treatment if a patient presents with both illnesses because the medications tend to work against each other. While a depressed mood is usually seen as deleterious, it may have adaptive benefits. Depression chat. Laboratory tests can provide medical data for diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, but currently not for depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other mental disorders. A third treatment, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), may be used when chemical treatment fails. The term is generally not used in countries which instead use the ICD-10 system, but the diagnosis of depressive episode is very similar to an episode of major depression. Vincent van Gogh, who himself suffered from depression and mitted suicide, painted this picture in 1890 of a man that can symbolize the desperation and hopelessness felt in depression. Depression appears to have the effect of stopping a person in his tracks and forcing him to turn inwards and engage in a period of self reflection; it is a deeply introspective state. The social navigation hypothesis emphasizes that an individual can bee tightly ensnared in an overly restrictive matrix of social exchange contracts, and that this situation sometimes necessitates a radical contractual upheaval that is beyond conventional methods of negotiation. A lack of control over one's environment can lead to feelings of helplessness. A depressed mood is generally situational and reactive, and associated with grief, loss, or a major social transition. Freud noted the similarities between mourning and depression (then called melancholia) in a now famous paper entitled, "Mourning and Melancholia". Many people think that there is something shameful about being afflicted with mental illness, and this stigma can lead to discrimination.
