Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) such as venlafaxine (Effexor) and duloxetine (Cymbalta) are a newer form of antidepressant that works on both noradrenaline and serotonin.

In the field of psychiatry, the word depression can also have this meaning of low mood but more specifically refers to a mental illness when it has reached a severity and duration to warrant a diagnosis, whether there is an obvious situational cause or not; see Clinical depression.

It is thought that one cause of depression is an inadequate amount of serotonin, a chemical used in the brain to transmit signals between neurons. Reactions to events, often a loss in some form, are perhaps the most obvious causes. Seasonal affective disorder may point to an atavistic link with behaviour in hibernation. A check-list of symptoms is not a diagnosis. However, if depressed mood lasts at least two weeks, and is acpanied by other symptoms that interfere with daily living, it may be seen as a symptom of clinical depression, dysthymia or some other diagnosable mental illness, or alternatively as sub-syndromal depression.

Depression of the central nervous system of an animal may be expressed as drowsiness or sleep, lack of coordination and unconsciousness. Depression may also be orbid with cardiovascular disorders. The different types of Depression and Anxiety are classified separately by the DSM-IV-TR, with the exception of hypomania, which is included in the bipolar disorder category.

Depression is suffering, sometimes seen as mental echoes of physical pain.
