  Cognitive behaviour therapy has been demonstrated in carefully controlled studies to be among the foremost of the recent wave of methods which achieve more rapid and lasting results than traditional "talk therapy" analysis.

  While a depressed mood is usually seen as deleterious, it may have adaptive benefits. Close medical supervision is critical to proper treatment if a patient presents with both illnesses because the medications tend to work against each other.

  For individuals who are in genuine need, however, the fitness cost of major depression is low because the individual is not generating many fitness benefits.

  However, if depressed mood lasts at least two weeks, and is acpanied by other symptoms that interfere with daily living, it may be seen as a symptom of clinical depression, dysthymia or some other diagnosable mental illness, or alternatively as sub-syndromal depression.
